@Missysmom you will get a completely different taste.....best to get the gingerroot.  I juice and have added the power when I have not had the root and a total difference in the taste. A good quality ginger tea would be good also.  Plus when using ginger root a bit goes a long way so I would not use more than an inch as in Minabey message.

I love ginger. I just want to share since I'm drinking ginger tea at the moment.

1 inch ginger grated to a cup of hot water + honey to taste. (Or with lemon too)

I drink this when for stomach aches (acidic or gas or bloat) and when I got exposed to someone with a cold and/or starting to feel like I would be catching a cold. I haven't had a cold in the last year since I started on this. (Knock on wood) I find it soothing for my throat. It does kind of take a bit of getting used to but I love the taste now.

I've also grated a huge ginger in a glass jar and poured boiling water in it. When it cools, I'll squeeze a lemon in it and keep in the fridge to have it ready when I want a drink later. Can also be made hot or cold, just add water and honey. I prefer to add honey before drinking because I've read that honey loses some of its health benefits in heat.

Me too I like ginger a lot..thanks for sharing your tea recipe..love it!

@Missysmom I hope you & your hubby get well soon.

Jeannine is right, the powdered ones tastes different. Also, I'm not sure you'll be getting the same healing properties with the root as with the powder. Who knows, I might be wrong.

I hope you'll be able to try it. It soothes the throat and helps clear up a bit of stuffiness.

I think this will be my spring 2017 project.....to start from the actual root I think takes lots of patience which might be a winter project............

What gorgeous plants!

My son wants to start a herb pot. Which herbs would be the easiest to grow and he could also use in cooking.

I was thinking basil, thyme. Ideally he wants to grow from seed. Any ideas?

We have mint and rosemary in the garden already,

Chives.  They look great, have purple flowers in the summer.  You can keep cutting and they keep growing, and they are DELICIOUS.

My mother used to make the BEST EVER potato salad when we were kids.

Diced new potatoes, with skins on

With salad cream and chopped chives stirred in.

So simple and 10x nicer than the fancy gloopy potato salads you can buy ready made, or with mayo and onion.

I grew several types of parsley last year, they were super easy and you can put them about anything or just use as garnish if he wants.

Julia that is great that your encouraging your son to work with plants. Was watching a show where the owner of the plant farm has section just for kids to learn and gain knowledge of growing food, plants, and trees.  His comment was that less and less of the younger generation show an interest anymore.  Basil, mint, parsley, thyme and sage are easy to grow......sage, mint and thyme should be grown in a container as they are an invasive plant......they rule the garden patch......sage is awful once it takes over the roots spread everywhere.........garlic chives to me have the best taste......and of course basil is among my favorites..........let us know how he does.

This is nice for starters..you take three pots..fill them up with soil and then plant your Herbs..I wouldn`t take to many as shown..and I also wouldn`t take seed...that does take some heat and hardening? (I don`t know the word I am afraid :D) but it is nice too..all depends a little on what you really want..

Thanks Jo-Anne, I really like the look if the 3 pots. we have a greenhouse here that the tortoises live in so i could grow some from seed and then harden off in a cold frame.

That is beautiful!   I bet it smells heavenly.

I might have to do something like that with flowers when I get to our beach cottage in Oregon.

Is that tiered or are top two pots sunk in the soil?
