Kibble worth chewing

Commercial kibble lasts for only a few seconds on a dog’s palate. This homemade recipe makes a chewy kibble that dogs will savor and enjoy. It’s also a great kibble for dogs with sensitive mouths or as a treat recipe for families with large, well-behaved packs requiring treats in bulk.

Nonstick cooking spray
2 large eggs
1 cup water
¼ cup sunflower oil
1 (15-ounce) can solid-pack pumpkin puree
1 cup chopped fresh parsley
½ (10-ounce) package frozen spinach, thawed
1 pound ground beef (75% lean)

“1½ cups rye flour
1½ cups quick-cooking rolled oats
½ cup nonfat instant powdered milk
¼ cup nutritional yeast

Preheat the oven to 350°F.

Spray a 12 by 18-inch rimmed baking sheet with nonstick cooking spray.

Whisk the eggs, water, sunflower oil, pumpkin, and parsley in a large bowl.

Add the spinach and ground beef to the egg mixture and stir to combine and break up the beef.

Add the flour, oats, powdered milk, and nutritional yeast and stir until combined.
Transfer the dough to the prepared baking sheet and press or roll to a ½-inch thickness.
Bake for 1 hour, then remove from the oven and allow to cool on the baking sheet. To create a firmer kibble, turn off the oven and allow the kibble to remain in the oven with the door closed for an additional hour.
When cooled, cut into 1-inch squares with a sharp knife.

“DAILY PORTION
Divide into two meals, or serve one-half the daily portion per day with one-half the normal amount of dry food.
