Hairless Chi? No! - Hairless Shih

Recommended Posts

I may be getting this little guy to foster for the next 3-4 months.  Not sure yet WHY he's mostly hairless but if baths, medication, yummy food and spoiling can grow hair - I'll give it a try.  I think.....

Oh dear how very upsetting this is to see. I do so hope it can grow some hair, and that it finds a happy place to live and be loved. Soooooooooo upset at this

If I can do this....grow hair on this cutie - I will make an info-mercial for growing hair on bald men.  LOL.

I'm not sure what's wrong with Zumba but know skin conditions can greatly affect the breed.

Stay tuned for more updates!

That's bizarre.  But from what I can tell the skin doesn't really look irritated.  I wonder if he's been shaved with a surgical blade?

Oooh what a cutie Zumba is, Love that sweet face! I so hope you get him and can't wait to see as he progresses. My Missy has a place on her chest that doesn't grow hair, there is nothing wrong it just doesn't grow hair there, odd. Will be interested to see what you find out that may work!

Her skin wasn't red, irritated, bleeding or scabby?  I've fostered tons of allergy dogs (and owned a few of my own), and I've never seen a single one who's skin looked anywhere near as healthy as that dog in the picture! Of course it could be that the picture just isn't showing it up?  Or maybe it's my eyes?  To me that looks like some kind of weird hair loss that's leaving the skin healthy.

And usually dogs with mange look a lot worse than that, too.

If it's anything medical I would guess maybe something like hypothyroid or some form of alopecia (if so, look into supplementing with melatonin -- the greyhound people use it for flank alopecia with good success).

What a sweet looking face.........from the picture the skin looks healthy and not irritated from skin issues......If I use a 10 blade on Winnie that is what she would look like.........maybe and just maybe the poor guy was shaved down due to matting issues, I mean server matting issues where they do use a surgical blade. Time will tell.....a good healthy diet and lots of loving may due the trick........bless you Marlene  if anyone can take the time to do this correctly it will be you.......fingers crossed that Kumba can be in your care.

Poor little pup!  But his days are looking brighter. I see lots of hair in his future. :P

He's got such a sweet expression. I hope he finds a furever home in no time.

Excited to see/hear more about Zumba. In the meantime, I'll just cheer you along, Marlene. :cheer:

At this point I don't know anything about him.......where he came from (shelter?) or what the condition is.  I agree that his skin looks perfectly healthy.  I am being told he'll come with medicated shampoo and antihistamines (?)  So, sounds like he's itchy.

Sheila - did Missy have hair on her back?  I don't know if Zumba does.......what was Missy's diagnosis?

I hate to say this..........but the gal that runs the Shih Tzu rescue is married to a vet.  I don't think much of him and would never take one of my dogs to him so I don't have a lot of confidence in his diagnosis (whatever it is).

Yes Missy did have hair on her back.but not legs ,tail, around her mouth, stomach, chest, hers was a skin infection, and allergies.the difference was,her skin looked burnt, red irritated, scaly ,raw, painful.she was put on chlorheptadine shampoo  and conditioner, and some kind of drops, and was put on zeniquin antibiotic  for a whole month.was also put on eye drops but couldnt handle those.had to give baths every 2 days.she was allergy tested and does take injections every 3 weeks and stays away from the food allergies.she also takes  1/2 of a chlortab in the morning and 1/4 temeril p in the evening.plus she has 2 different kinds of medication thats in a mousse form.you'd never know this by looking at her now

I would sit and hold her and just cry!!!! the vets here ran out of things to try on her, then we went to the specialist...

Lil Zumba (already known around here as Zoomie) is not coming to me after all.  He seems to be allergic to all the shampoos they have tried on him and he's developed pustule all over :-(  They are going to keep him where he is and take him to a dermatologist.

Sheila?  Do you mind if I copy and send (to the rescue) the info you shared about Missy's treatment?  It might give them something to try or dismiss.

Oh good!  I was wishing I could see what she looked like "before".  Could I be a real pest and also ask for a pic of Missy by herself as she looks now - "after".

Supposedly he's 5 yrs old.  7 lbs.  Blood tests "almost perfect" - skin scraping, negative.

I really hope they can figure out what is going on and help him.  He looks like such a sweet little thing.  He has such a sweet face!
