Grooming problem: Should I purchase a kit or go to the Salon

Recommended Posts

laurenspuppy

My baby is too playful that grooming her fur becomes a challenge with every salon that I've been to. I was thinking if I should buy a grooming kit then do it at home instead. I can surely watch some tutorial online right? I find it more cost-effective and it will serve as our bonding time as well. As an owner, I always want to make sure that my playful baby looks presentable wherever she goes.

:welcomeani: to our Shih Tzu family.

How old is your baby? Self taught grooming is very satisfying and the bonding time brings you even closer. You do have to have a spare corner or area to set up a table and the time to devote to it......A lot of here have taught ourselves and bought the basic equipment. You Tube has been a big learning tool for us all and even though one particular video might not the be the way or style your looking for so watch them all and combine them into a routine your comfortable with.

All the questions you will have can be asked and answered right here as we all have our own ways and short cuts to do things tidy.

I made a series of videos on here that shows how I started out with just the basics learning how and it evolved in time and technique

It cost a bit to start up with a basic table, scissors, clippers and trimmers etc....so it's up to you to be committed to doing it yourself once it's bought or stay with a professional and teach her basic table manners at home.

Looking forward to seeing and hearing all about your baby

Yes, how old is she?

Everything is playtime when they are little, and my two nearly drove me to distraction with the fun, games, wriggling, squirming and high jinks every time I got out a brush.  Bless 'em.  But they do grow up, and although Tara still seems to have exceedingly ticklish feet (understatement!) they are both great with grooming now.

It is really a case of little and often, and they will slowly get used to it.  But I like the thought that my two like the experience, so I have always tried to make it enjoyable for them. :)

I just want to say thank you for all your tips, I will surely keep your suggestion in mind. I must say that this community is really helpful in providing solutions to dog problems.

@PipsMom I will visit the said thread and will watch some video tutorial about grooming. :cheezy:

Lau is seven months old and Ringel is a year and a half, they are both Shih Tzu. Donny is a golden retriever and he's 8 years old, I don't have any problem dealing with him as he is a well-trained companion -- he also listens to my commands and behaves well while having his fur done.

BTW, would you mind providing me a helping hand in choosing which of these dog grooming kits should I purchase first? I will also appreciate it if you can suggest online pet store wherein there's a wide variety of options. I will also try to visit a local pet shop nearby to have a comparison of the price.

Thank you @pipmoms for providing me with the list of must have grooming supplies. I must say that you are correct. It is best to look and invest in quality products, but I am seeing a lot of options which creates confusion on which I should purchase first. We are from different countries; you are from the UK while I am from Florida, some of the things that you have suggested are not available in my location, pity me… Though I have tried to look for similar items, which you have mentioned, and came across these dog grooming products. Would you mind providing me with a helping hand? Which kit would suit me best? Also, can you give me some advice on how can I make the grooming session enjoyable for my pet? Lastly, is it safe to blow-dry my dog with mild heat?
