Crate Training Schedule

Recommended Posts

Peanut's Mom

So, I am starting to realize that in the 2 weeks since Peanut has been home with us, we have not been adhering to a strict enough schedule...he is actually doing well with potty pads and has begun to take himself over there. However, the whining when left alone in his crate does not stop, and he is able to keep it up for impressive amounts of time so I wind up spending most of the day with him--I am hoping the new schedule will help help alleviate this problem. I found this sample schedule online, and was hoping someone would be kind enough to glance at it and let me know if it basically seems like a good schedule.

6:30 a.m. Out of bed and out of the house right away! Do not pause for any purpose.

6:45 Puppy plays in kitchen while human fixes breakfast

7:00 Food and water for 15 minutes (then bowls taken away; do not leave out)

7:30 Go outside with you for walk.

7:45 Play in kitchen

8:15 In crate. No food or water in crate, but ice cubes on dish OK.

11:30 Food and water for 15 minutes (then bowls taken away)

Noon Go outside with you for walk.

12:15 p.m. Play in kitchen

12:45 Back in crate. No food or water in crate, but ice cubes on dish OK.

4:30 Give food and water for 15 minutes (bowls then taken away)

5:00 Go outside with you, then play in kitchen

5:45 Back in crate. No food or water in crate, but ice cubes on dish OK.

7:30 Give water

7:45 Go outside with you for walk.

8:00 Play in kitchen

8:30 Back in crate. No food or water in crate, but ice cubes on dish OK.

10:30 Go outside with you then put back in crate overnight

Our main modifcations are thyat at 6 he goes for his morning walk for about 20-30 mins, and then is re-crated with his breakfast until about 8. His other meals will be left down for 30 minutes (the poor things seems to forget his food is out unless I draw his attention to it). Also, as I mentioned he is on potty pads so he will not go outside when the schedule says to for the bathroom, just when it indicates for a walk and he will not be crated for as long in the afternoon as it says.

So, my main questions are:

1. Does this basically look like a good schedule for us to try and establish some order in the house?

2. This schedule says to take his water up after every meal, but others have told me he should have 24 hour access. What is the preferable way to go?

In case anyone is interested, here is the link where I found the schedule: http://www.operationkindness.org/images/PDF/HOUSETRAINING_2004.pdf

And, a photo of Peanut on his first trip down the shore..dressed appropriate for the occasion of course! Thanks SO much in advance for the help!

I got a water bottle to attach to the crate so mine would have water at all times. I think it sounds pretty good otherwise. Peanut sure is a cutie!!!

I just got his water bottle that I ordered in the mail, and he seems to like it, so we will go with that for now. Thanks for the seal of approval, and the compliment!

I don't have a problem with the schedule, but I would advise you to modify it to suit your particular situation.

Peanut is a very young puppy and may "catch on" to house-training quickly...or it may take a couple of months. Please be patient!

My schedule was similar to yours, however after 5pm dinner, another outside trip, and rather than going back in the crate, 2 hours of free roaming in the house, playing with toys etc, getting her used to using pee pad if she needed to, because I was also training her for roaming during the day with my other one. Then, 7:30pm back in the crate for the night. Sophie would sleep right through till I woke her up at 6am the next day, never once did she wake up, it was heaven! up until July 1st Canada Day fireworks.

She is a very active little girl. Ever since I got her at 11 weeks old, this was her schedule, at 6months I slowly trained her to roam during the day, and she was perfect.

She is 1 yr 8 months old now. Fireworks (both her and my other Shih Tzu Louie are terrifified of fireworks) woke her up around 10pm. I calmed both of them, Louie passes out as soon as I put doggie calming music, however it does nothing for Sophie. Once the fireworks ended, I put her back in the crate for the night. Unfortunately for three or four days, there were the odd fireworks going off which would wake her up. I'd let her out of the crate, just for a few minutes to calm her and back in again. Every single day since July 1st, even now that fireworks are over, she still wakes up and wants to be let out of her crate. Sometimes two or three times. Last night, 10:30pm, 3:15am and 5am.

I have kept her up later than her usual 7:30pm, stretching to 8:30pm-9pm before crating her. I've kept the same routine, announce its time to go to your crate, use the pee pad one last time, she gets a milkbone in her crate, close the door, but not locked, turn the light off and she's always been fine.

Everytime she comes out, I say "no, back in your crate", pick her up and back in she goes. If I'm in bed, she comes to my room, jumps on my bed, and starts licking me as if to say "hi! I'm here!" LOL. I say, "NO, back in your crate" pick her up, etc.

She has been frightened by the fireworks, however she is still waking up. She was always such a sound sleeper for 10-11hours a night.

They are walked twice a day for 20 minutes, and lots of play time in the house, and outside playing fetch.

Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Scout's Mom

I had a schedule for Scout as well and it helped a lot, but she did have access to water at all times.

The pic of Peanut is adorable!

I have been advised to use Rescue Remedy for my puppy, and on the website where I have been reading up on it, it mentions it's great for fireworks. I just put a few drops in Riley's water and food :) Has calmed him down a treat and he's able to sleep at night now.

I think I'll get him used to fireworks early on whilst he's still young by playing the sound quietly from a youtube.com video. Then as time goes by, it can be played louder so he gets used to the sound again. Anyone else done this?

Sophie's Haven

I use Rescue Remedy for Thunderstorms, I have 3 that pace when a storm is in the area. My Lucy went bonkers this past 4th of July holiday with firecrackers going off in the area but it did not help with that for us. I had to use Valerian Root, that time to calm her down, it appears to be stronger. But Rescue Remedy is a good product to help calm down your pet.
