I took Winnie and Lucy out and about for the day a couple of weeks ago and they had their padded harness on.......what a mess when we got home. Well first they looked so unkept because of the harness but brushing them out when we got home was not fun. It was not bad but not fun...........What kind of lead should I be looking for......they do not use collars either due to the hair.....I did see a leash that had a collar of the same thickness.....very narrow and beaded. But does the hair snag in between the beads? Should I be looking for a narrow nylon lead......still want to be able to secure them in the car to their booster seat........any suggestion would be great....want the hair to look neat when they are walking......am I asking for to much?

I'll be watching this for a answer too. I've been dissatisfied for sometime now. Harness makes knots and matts .....

neck collar a no no..silly sod pulls and chokes and coughs too much...scares me

I use the type of leashes you mention with the beads. (The kind I make.)

I've never noticed the hair catching in the beads, but the beads are quite a ways away from the dog.

I do periodically toss the leashes in the crates when traveling to shows, and I've still never noticed dog hair attached.

Vicki do you mind giving the measurements of the lead that you have posted? Am I looking at it right...does it have 4 sections?

I looked for tutorials but they were crap and not at all like yours. I would really prefer to make them over buying them. Plus the size of the cording too.......

The owner of www.foxypups.com, Cindy Hice made me a silk step in harness. I found her at yorkietalk and spoiledmaltese when Snickers had a bad matting episode after he came back from a 2 day stay at his sitter.

So far so good.

Vicki is this a kind that would be good to be used in campgrounds to on vacation?

Very good question! This didn't even cross my mind as Gizmo's hair isn't long enough yet to be an issue with his collar. I will look forward to hearing some of the answers from the group!

Overall, the leash is about 4 foot. They certainly could be made to just about any length though.

I'm not sure I understand about what you mean by "sections". Once finished, it's one piece, but several pieces, depending on the type of leash, are connected together. The one pictured is a Martingale with Kindness added (in Macrame).

The handle is one piece, the beaded section is one piece. Those two are connected together and then connected to a swivel. Then depending on the type of collar wanted, another piece is also connected to the other end of the swivel. With the Kindness added, there is yet another piece which I Macrame and then it's added to the collar part. (Guess that may be the four sections you're asking about.

The beads really wouldn't be necessary either, PLUS they get rather expensive! The swivel isn't really necessary either, but I find them to be nice additions.

I've also found that most of the collar types used in this type of leash can easily be escaped. That's why I like the Martingales.

They can be made with any size of Paracord (or similar). The ones I make are size 325, though I have made different sizes.

I've never found a tutorial for these either and just looked at one closely and came up with my own ideas.

Truthfully, they are a real pain to make!

Also, you could just make the collar part with a ring on the end which you could connect to any "store bought" leash.

Thanks Vicki for the information......I am going to try and make one and see how it comes out. The reason why I asked about the beads getting snagged in the hair was all the leads I saw on line yesteday were totally made from beading from the collar to the leash....the whole thing......I have my own personal necklaces that tend to pinch sometimes so it made me think the one's that were completely beaded would do the same thing.......I like the way you made yours with a bit of bling.......so I am going to copy hopefully it will work!!!

Sara, a lot will depend on which options you chose when you ordered the leash.

Did you also get the collar, or did the one you ordered have it attached?

That looks similar to what I make without all the bells & whistles... :whistling:

I ordered the slip lead..so I don't have to mess with collars. They were $8 each. From what they look like they are very similar to the leads we used at the vet clinic I used to work at. They work like a noose...and just slip over the head.

Yeah I definitely don't need the uber fancy leads with beads and such, even tho they are pretty!

We have slip leads for the Poodles and I've been known to use them with the Tzu occasionally. Sheila, for camping I would go with a kindness martingale lead - if the dog tries to take-off, the martingale tightens but exerts equal pressure all around the neck rather than just on the trachea (like a slip lead). Most show leads come in 4' or 6' lengths, and I personally would never use a lead longer than 6' (and NEVER those damn dangerous flexis). If your dog is more than 6' away from you, you cannot react quickly-enough if there is danger.
